A Tool for Greater Understanding of Work, Life and Relationships

While many therapies focus on directly talking through problems and issues, Metaphors of Movement (MoM) adds a powerful layer by disrupting the deeper unconscious metaphorical structure that is keeping the problem in place. It...

Do you like Puzzles?

MoM is like laying down the puzzle pieces of a client’s problem out on the table. Then instead of the client only seeing the edges, or the outline of their experience, the practitioner helps the client to see how all the pieces connect.

This gives the client a clear insight and understanding of thier situations. With this fuller and more complete picture, the client can start taking action and exploring what they could do next.

What is Metaphors of Movement?

Metaphors of Movement (MoM) is an emerging modality that shakes up the deeper unconscious metaphorical structures of a problem by creating movement within the inner metaphorical landscape. MoM uses idioms as a “back” doorway into a client’s metaphorical experience.

For example, let’s say a client comes to you because they want to move forward, but after a few sessions, they still feel stuck. They say : “It’s like I’m in the pit of despair.”

With MoM, that phrase tells you a lot. Think about it, if someone is literally in a pit, they’re surrounded by walls on all sides. So of course they can’t move forward. It’s not that they are not trying, it’s about being in a situation where forward movement isn’t structurally possible.

How Metaphors of Movement Works

Metaphors of Movement is built around two core principles.

Firstly, it's about creating understanding and integration between the dominant (conscious) and non-dominant (unconscious) hemispheres of the brain. The Metaphors of Movement practitioner essentially acts as the corpus callosum, serving as a bridge that helps translate unconscious experience into language the conscious mind can understand.

Secondly, it's about getting the client moving and taking action, wherever that’s possible within their experience.

This means Metaphors of Movement does not focus on:

  • The client’s story (i.e., what happened)
  • The client’s emotions or how they feel physically
  • The client’s belief systems

Metaphors of Movement operates within the realm of autogenic metaphor that is, metaphor generated naturally and internally by the client. All the metaphorical structures explored during the process arise organically from the client, with no content imposed by the therapist.

Metaphors of Movement utilizes idiomatic communication to translate unconscious experience from the non-dominant hemisphere of the brain to conscious awareness (dominant hemisphere). This gives a fuller picture of the problem, creating harmonized understanding within the brain.

About Dale

Hi, I’m Dale Turnbull, an Englishman living in New York, and I help people create meaningful change through training, coaching, and mentoring in Metaphors of Movement. My aim is simple: to open up new possibilities for both clients and therapists by exploring how change really works.

I got started in this field through Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), learning directly from the creators John Grinder and Richard Bandler. That experience kicked off a fascination with what is the differnece that truly makes the difference when it comes to change work. Since then, I’ve added a few more tools to my kit including Hypnosis, Provocative Change Works (PCW), Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) and Metaphors of Movement (MoM).

After more than 12 years working with individuals and organizations, I’m now focused on sharing this powerful, eye-opening approach with others. If you're curious about how this change works... let’s talk.
