Why do we care about going up in the world?

We learn from an early age that up is good and down is bad. From climbing the career ladder to reaching the heights where the big man himself, GOD, resides. On the flip side, we can find ourselves in a low place, in the pits, demoted, or even going straight to hell.

Going up in the world can lead us to a position where others might want to follow us and look up to us. However, it can also have its disadvantages.

After all, it can be lonely at the top. Having worked in the corporate field for a long time, I have witnessed many experiences of highs and lows. Why is this?

Well, let’s consider the person on top of a mountain. They have reached their peak; they are up there. They can see for miles and have a broad perspective on things.

Here are a few questions for that person:

  • How long can someone stay in this position?
  • Do you have resources to sustain you?
  • How long can you sustain yourself?

Ultimately, the person who has hit the peak will at some point come down. It might be a small decline, or maybe they see another peak. But ultimately, this is short-lived.

Life itself has its ups and downs, its peaks and troughs. Some would even argue that being level-headed and not constantly chasing the big highs can leave us walking a grounded path. For some, it's about the adventure; for others, the challenge. And for others, it’s the balance of just putting one foot in front of the other.
